Don’t ever call them if you have an injured wild animal issue. They haven’t been trained, thus they’re completely incompetent to handle this sort of thing. They don’t understand the first thing about restraining injured animals, they don’t have any wildlife rehab resources, and worst of all they don’t even know how to put an animal down properly. I called for a deer with a broken leg and the officer that responded was basically too scared to get close to an injured baby deer and so he shot it twice without getting a kill shot and had to shoot it a third time on my instruction to shoot it in the base of the skull. This was only after I argued that I wanted to take it to a wildlife rescue. The officer couldn’t understand why I was restraining the deer (of course, it kept bolting when I’d initially approached it, but collapsed after making it 40-50 feet, so I caught up with it, carried it closer to my car, and restrained it while waiting for the officer). The officer argued that because it could still get up and run away, we should let it go, and instructed me to let go of the deer. I told him either he could put it down or I’d hog-tie it and find an animal rescue, so he *tried* to shoot it. I left the scene in disgust. This is not how I’ve seen officers in other places handle injured animals and I was horrified by the whole situation.
